The end of summer means the new school year is right around the corner. The approaching school year means it is almost time to get your kids to their doctors’ appointments for shots, physical examinations, boosters, etc. The one appointment that often gets skipped is a dental exam. A dental examination is as important as a booster and should be a part of your back to school check-ups. According to the American Dental Association, “more than one-half of all children ages five to nine have at least one cavity or filling. A painful tooth or chronic dental problem can lead to difficulty in eating, speaking, or concentrating.” Children may not know how to communicate pain and issues with their teeth, even though they are hindering their performance in the classroom. Often time problems with the mouth cause children to appear anxious or frustrated, both of which are not mindsets that are conducive to learning. Getting them to a dental examination before school begins will allow you to address the issues and send them into the classroom pain-free and ready to learn. Making your ‘Back-To-School’ dental examination as routine as brushing your teeth will leave your children with healthier smiles and better grades. Something we can all smile about!
