Dental Sealants are a tool used to help protect your child’s teeth from cavities. Sealants are typically used on the back teeth, where chewing occurs, and cavities most often form. Sealants application is quick and painless. Made of plastic, they cover the tooth and create a barrier between the tooth and cavity-causing bacteria. While there is no guarantee that a cavity won’t form, studies have shown that the risk is much less when sealants are used.
During application, your child’s tooth will be cleaned and dried to prepare for the sealant. The sealant material is then applied to the selected tooth, where it fills the grooves and pits and is then hardened with a special light. There is no downtime; in fact, your child will be allowed to eat right after.
Your dentist will check the sealants at every exam for wear and tear. At times they will need to be repaired or replaced; our sealants are guaranteed for three years. Most insurance companies will cover all or part of the cost of sealants. We highly recommend you check with the office and your insurance company before the procedure to verify your coverage.
Brushing, flossing, and maintaining good oral health routines remain critically important, and that includes brushing any and all teeth treated with dental sealants. Be sure to schedule and keep your six-month dental cleanings as well.
